MSA Safety established their roots in West Virginia, following the aftermath of the Jed Mine tragedy on March 26, 1912, when more than 80 miners perished from a methane gas explosion. Mine engineer John T. Ryan, became devoted to miner safety and dedicated his life's work to safety equipment used throughout mines. Throughout the early stages of development, Thomas Edison was consulted by Mr. Ryan and helped develop an electric cap lamp, which drastically reduced mine explosions by 75% over the next 25 years. Edison himself, would later testify that this invention was in fact the one that did the most for humanity. Decades of innovation would follow with other essential PPE items like first aid kits, cutting edge helmets and gas detection devices.
