Since 1953 WD-40 has been a multi-use product that has helped shape infrastructure around the world. As the Rock Chemical Company tested their line of rust-prevent solvents and degreasers for the aerospace industry, they found success with their 40th water displacement formula, hence the WD in their title and the 40. WD-40 began to expand as it protected Convair's Atlas Missile from rust and corrision throughout the 1950s, to reconditioning flood and rain damaged vehicles during Hurricane Carla in 1961. In the 60s/70s, WD-40 was also sent to Vietnam to prevent moisture damage on firearms used by armed forces and eventually went public on NASDAQ. Throughout the 1980s, WD-40 Company Ltd. expands to international markets in Europe, Asia and Australia. By the 1990s, WD-40 was found in 4 out of 5 American households and was used by 81% of professionals at work. Several new innovations were rolled out through the 2000s as spray, streams, non-aerosol and EZ-Reach options became readily available.
